The Adirondack Lynx plan to pick up the pieces of the women's scholastic soccer program that is being stopped due to budget cuts by the governor of NY
This summer Governor Patterson has cut the budget to the 2009 Empire State games that were to be held in the Hudson Valley Region. This would have forced all summer athletes to pay $285/participant. When this happened the planning committee decided they were not interested in hosting the event.
Knowing the importance this event holds for the Adirondack Region, the Adirondack Lynx, a local Women's Amateur Team that plays in the WPSL (One of the top 5 women's leagues in the WORLD!) felt it should step forward and assist these high school players this summer. PJ Motsiff, Owner of the Adirondack Lynx, brought this high level team to the area to offer opportunities for females to see and play at the highest levels. The WPSL team started 4 years ago. It currently plays its home matches at the multi-million dollar Golden Goal soccer complex near Lake George, NY.
Motsiff felt, "The tradition of bringing the best high school players together for the summer months should not stop just because we are in a time of economic supression. More then ever these committed ladies need the opportunity to train and play at the highest levels throughout the summer months in order for them to excel during their fall seasons."
Motsiff has already planned a full schedule of events for the U17 team. Training will begin in mid-April. The last two weeks of April the team will play friendly matches against Skidmore, RPI and New Paltz. In May the team will travel to Needham, Mass. on Memorial Day weekend for Mass Premier Soccer's College Showcase. The Team will then play a number of friendlies throughout the summer. This group will then conclude their summer season by playing in US Club Soccer's National College Showcase in Virginia Beach, VA July 31-August 1.
In putting this team together Motsiff will be volunteering his time to coach the girls. The cost of the program for players is currently just the uniform as well as the tournament entry fee for the showcases. Motsiff is currently working on getting these costs covered as well. "We already have some top college players that will be coming in to the area for the summer to play. I felt merging these two groups to train for a few months would be extremely beneficial."
